We visited Westminster University in London yesterday – thanks go to George and his active team of volunteers from the Westminster Enterprise Entity (WESTEE) and for everybody at DN Digital for working hard to put it all together. Feedback from everybody involved was overwhelmingly positive, so we hope to have more opportunities to expand on this format and run similar events at Westminster and other universities in the future.

Nils Millahn, our technical director, gave an inspirational talk to students on maximising their chances of finding work in the digital technology industry, what sort of opportunities there are and what students can and should be doing right now to gain valuable experience. A passionate group of students from 5 different IT courses attended. The talk evolved into an open discussion about areas such as volunteering, the life-work balance, standing out amongst other candidates in these difficult economic times – all important subjects that were discussed further over lunch. It was great to meet students and get to share ideas with them.

In the afternoon, Nils ran a full-on Flash training workshop for the students, with the ambitious goal of building a Flash game from scratch in under 2 hours. We had a lot of fun – and of course everybody also had a great opportunity to learn Flash straight from an industry professional. Some of the students had never used Flash before but before long everybody was drawing clouds and trees, animating on the timeline and writing Actionscript code. Well done everybody for staying so focussed throughout!

We’re running a student competition now over the next couple of weeks to polish, reinvent or otherwise alter the game – we’re ready for you to blow us away with your ideas and creativity! Prizes await! Results will be posted here on this blog and on the WESTEE Facebook Page.

Only students who attended the workshop at Westminster University are eligible for prizes, however if you’d also like to have a go, feel free to download the FLA below and send us your final SWF. Please include your name, a bit of info on who you are and use ‘Westminster Uni Flash Game’ in the subject line.

Here are some links, as promised on the day:

Thanks again for everybody for welcoming us, we had a great time and hope to see you all soon! Happy studying and happy coding in the meantime!
